andrewstransport > Saunders Roe SRA1 prototype jet flying boat fighter TG263, Solent Sky Museum, Southampton, 15 June 2008. This extraordinary aircraft was conceived towards the end of the Second World War for use in island-hopping campaigns against Japan. First flew in 1947.
andrewstransport > Short SB5 WG768, Royal Air Force Museum, Cosford, Fri 14 December 2012. Research aircraft built ito compare alternative wing and tail designs with that proposed by English Electric for their P1. The SB5 first flew in 1952 with the high tail visible at left behind the cockpit. The tail at centre belongs to the P1.
andrewstransport > English Electric P1 WG760 & Short SB5 WG768, Royal Air Force Museum, Cosford, Fri 14 December 2012. The supersonic prototypes, with the high tail first fitted to the SB5 at centre.
andrewstransport > Avro 707C WZ744, Royal Air Force Museum, Cosford, Fri 14 December 2012. Delta wing two seat trainer, based on the one-third scale development aircraft built as part of the Vulcan project. First flew in 1953.
andrewstransport > 'Prone position' Gloster Meteor F8 WK935, Royal Air Force Museum, Cosford, Fri 14 December 2012. Additional cockpit to investigate performance of pilot flying on his belly. First flew in 1954.
andrewstransport > English Electric P1 prototype WG760, Royal Air Force Museum, Cosford, Fri 14 December 2012. The first of two prototype supersonic aircraft from which the Lightning fighter was developed, First flew in 1954.
andrewstransport > Fairey Delta FD2 WG774, Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton, Wed 26 January 2011. One of two delta wing transonic research aircraft, both of which survive. First flew in 1954. Set world speed record of 1132mph in 1956.
andrewstransport > Fairey Delta FD2 WG777, Royal Air Force Museum, Cosford, Fri 14 December 2012. Fairey's other delta wing transonic research aircraft. First flew in 1956.

andrewstransport > Short SC1 XG905, Ulster Transport Museum, Cultra, Co Down, Thurs 17 May 2012. XG905 is one of two SC1s built by Shorts to investigate vertical take off and landing. It first flew in 1958. It had no fewer than five Rolls-Royce RB108 engines. Four provided vertical thrust, and took air through the large grid behind the cockpit. The fifth engine was for normal horizontal flight. The aircraft made many flights, and successfully passed from vertical to horizontal flight at Farnborough in 1960. It crashed in 1963, killing its pilot, but was repaired and flew again. The other SC1, XG900, is at the Science Museum, South Kensington, London.
andrewstransport > Handley Page HP115 XP841, Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton, Wed 26 January 2011 1. Built to explore delta wing performance at low speeds. The shadow shows its planform, First flew in 1961.
