andrewstransport > Train 725, 12 September 2007 1 - 1755: E402.003, Villa San Giovanni   The 1145 InterCity Plus from Rome Termini to Syracuse (Sicily) arrives on time behind one of the four surviving class E.402 prototype locos.
andrewstransport > Train 725, 12 September 2007 2 - 1816   Within 20 minutes of arriving at Villa San Giovanni the nine coach train had been divided and the rear four coaches shunted onto the ferry, M/F Scilla.  This shot shows the front five coaches being embarked.

The train ferries are operated by Bluvia, the maritime arm of Italian State Rlys (FS).  In the distance, Tremestieri is approaching the Caronte & Tourist berths at Villa SG.

andrewstransport > M/F Scilla, 12 September 2007 2 - 1825    Looking north.  The train ferries are bow loaders only, so have to reverse after backing out of their berth, as has just happened here.  In the left distance Metin Dadayli has passed Ievoli Star as the pair head for the narrow northern exit of the Messina Strait, marked by the tall pylon on the Sicilian shore, just right of centre.  (There is another on the mainland.)
