andrewstransport > USS Cassin Young (DD-793), Boston, Mass, 6 October 2005 1.  Cassin Young is one of 175 Fletcher class destroyers built 1941 - 1945.  She was commisissioned in December 1943.  Cassin Young fought in the Pacific, where she was twice hit by kamikazes in 1945.  She is named for Captain Cassin Young, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for saving his ship (USS Vestal) at Pearl Harbor  Captain Young was killed while commanding heavy cruiser USS San Francisco during the Battle of Guadacanal in 1942.
andrewstransport > USS Cassin Young (DD-793), Boston, Mass, 6 October 2005 2.  Cassin Young was retained after the Second World War, not decommissioning until 1960.  Her armament was modernised, and she is preserved in late 1950s condition.
