Handley Page Halifax II W1048, RAF Museum, Hendon, 10 September 2015 1. This 35 Squadron Halifax was shot down on its first raid, on 23 April 1942 against the German battleship Tirpitz. Its crew landed it on a frozen Norwegian lake and all bar one escaped. The aircraft sank to the lake bed, from which it was recovered in 1973 in the condition seen here (apart from the restored nose turret).
