HMS Prince of Wales, Liverpool, 5 March 2020. The Royal Navy's new aircraft carrier had arrived on 28 February, and left on 6 March. Her flight deck, and that for sister Queen Elizabeth, were built at Birkenhead by Cammell Lairds. The ships' chaotic procurement means that, despite being the RN's biggest ever carriers, they can only operate the F-35B STOVL version of the Lockheed Martin Lightining II, which the RAF will also use. Contrary to what had been planned, they have not been fitted with the catapult and arresting equipment needed to operate the F-35C carrier variant, which the US Navy will use and which has longer range and larger payload.
