Soviet Buran space shuttle, Speyer Technik Museum, Germany, 19 March 2013 1. This 80 ton test vehicle was built in 1984 to test gliding and landing by shuttles after re-entry into the atmophere. It made 25 atmospheric flights but never went into space. A Buran shuttle made one unmanned automatic orbital flight in 1988, but this proved to be the only Buran space flight as the programme was discontinued in 1993 after the collapse of the USSR. Another Buran test-bed is preserved in Gorky Park, Moscow. Buran = Snowstorm.
