Statue of Lt Col Pierre van Ryneveld & Squadron Leader Quintin Brand, Johannesburg O R Tambo International Airport, 23 September 2018 1. The two men made the first flight from London to Cape Town, in 1920. They and two mechanics flew two Vickers Vimys, both of which were written off, and finshed in a de Havilland DH9. Their 6000 mile flight took 45 days, compared with 12 hours non-stop now. (The sea voyage from Southampton took two weeks.) The flight won a £5000 prize and both officers were knighted.
