LNER 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley & GNR No 1, Shildon cavalcade, 31 August 1975. Gresley introduced the A4s in 1935 to work the high speed London - Newcastle Silver Jubilee. The success of this train led the LNER to follow up in 1937 with the London - Edinburgh non-stop 'Coronation', which covered the 393 miles in six hours.
