Deeside Railway coat of arms, Milton of Crathes, Fri 22 May 2015. Welcome to the Royal Deeside Railway! The railway is based at Milton of Crathes, about 12 miles west of Aberdeen. It has a short line about one mile long on the site of the Aberdeen - Ballater branch. Originally independent, the Deeside Railway became part of the Great North of Scotland Rly and then the LNER. The Ballater branch closed in 1966. Ballater was the station for Balmoral so the royal train was a regular visitor for many years. The station was restored in 2006, but regrettably burnt down on 12 May 2015, just before my visit. Its future is now uncertain.
