Post Office underground railway car No 808, Amberley museum, Sun 12 October 2014 1. Driverless 2ft gauge third rail electric car built by Dick, Kerr (808 / 1931) for the Post Office underground railway between sorting offices in central London ('Mail Rail'). Seven miles long, it was the world's first fully automated railway. At its peak it carried four million letters a day, but most of the sorting offices it served were relocated and it closed in 2003. No 808 had been withdrawn in the early 1980s having been replaced by more powerful cars. It could carry 3/4 ton of mail.
