Post Office underground railway car No 809, National Railway Museum, York, Sat 8 September 2012. Driverless 2ft gauge 2w-2-2-2wRE built by Dick, Kerr (809 / 1931) for the Post Office underground railway between sorting offices in central London ('Mail Rail'). Seven miles long, it was the world's first fully automated railway. At its peak it carried four million letters a day, but most of the sorting offices it served were relocated and it closed in 2003.
