Welcome to the Snowdon Mountain Rly! Sun 21 August 2011. The only rack railway in Britain, it climbs 3100 ft in 4.7 miles from Llanberis to the summit of Snowdon, the highest mountain in England and Wales (3561ft). The return journey takes two and a half hours, including 30 minutes at the summit. At peak periods all seats are sold out and you have to return on your booked train or walk down! Trains do not run in winter. Unusually for Britain, journeys are narrated. The railway has always been a commercial enterprise and, although some locos and cariages date from the line's opening, it is not a volunteer heritage line.
