Driving axle from Snowdon Mountain Rly No 6 Padarn, Llanberis, Mon 21 August 2011. The 800mm gauge railway uses the Abt rack system. Carriages as well as locos are fitted with cogwheels. Following a disastrous opening day in 1896 when a loco became disengaged from the rack and careered over a precipice, guard rails as seen here were installed either side of the rack to engage with grippers mounted beneath locos and carriages.
