Alston station, 28 February 1976. Here is Alston two months before the Haltwhistle branch closed. A class 101 diesel train stands with a service to Haltwhisle. The last trains ran on Saturday 1 May; closure took effect the following Monday. Moves to preserve part of the branch began as soon as it closed. In 1979, Cumbria County Council bought the site of Alston station and the Cumbrian section of the track bed. In 1983 the South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society ran their first 2 foot gauge trains at Alston. Since then they have extended the line, and it now reaches Lintley. The ultimate goal is Slaggyford, five miles from Alston. Photo by Les Tindall.
