Petteril Bridge Junction accident site, Carlisle, October - December 2022
On Wed 19 October 2022 GBRf's 6C00 1715 Clitheroe - Carlisle yard cement train partially derailed on the down line at Petteril Bridge Junction, Carlisle, at about 2003. The train comprised 66739 Bluebell Railway and 14 JPA bogie tank wagons, each with a gross laden weight of 100 tonnes. Mercifully nobody was injured but damage was extensive. Reopening the line was a complex and protracted operation.
The 14 wagons and their recovery were as follows. Nos 1 - 7 were not derailed. 66739 took the first five to Carlisle yard on 21 October. They were 12454, 12458, 12462, 12452 & 12448. Nos 6 - 7 were 12453 & 12456. They were the last wagons to be removed, being taken to Upperby by 88003 Genesis on 16 November. The five derailed JPAs (nos 8 - 12 in the train) were: 12459, 12455, 12451, 12450 & 12449. 12459 was removed by road on 12 or 13 November, and 12455 & 12451 on the 14th. 60087 took 12450 & 12449 to Upperby on 4 November. The last two wagons were 12460 & 12461. They had not derailed and 60087 took them to Clitheroe on 31 October.
The line reopened on Wed 7 December 2022, after seven weeks of closure.
