Grand Bunker museum, Ouistreham, Normandy, 8 June 2019. The Atlantic Wall bunker was built in 1943 - 44 as part of a battery built to cover the Seine Bay and protect the Orne estuary. It overlooks Sword Beach and is 17m high because its purpose was to observe enemy shipping and supply their coordinates to a battery of six 15cm guns nearby at Riva Bella. The bunker has five floors with accommodation, communications equipment and, on top, the all-important rangefinder.
