Welcome to the Palace of Versailles! 7 February 2015. Originally a hunting lodge, it was extended and modified throughout the 17th and 19th centuries into the vast and magnificent palace known today. During this time it was the home of the king and his court, and was the capital of France. It symbolised the ancien regime of absolute monarchs who ruled France until the 1789 revolution.

$Palace of Versailles, 7 February 2015. Looking west. In the centre distance is the Marble Court which stands on the site of the original hunting lodge. On either side are the Ministers' wings, with offices and apartments partly visible on either side of them. Visitors only see a fraction of the palace. It is enormous. Under Louis XIV the palace had 4,000 residents, and up to 10,000 attended his court at a time.$
