Isenheim altarpiece, Unterlinden Museum, Colmar, Alsace, 17 July 2005 2. Matthias Grunewald painted the large and complex folding altarpiece between 1510 and 1516 for the Antonine canons of Isenheim in Alsace. They nursed victims of St Anthony's Fire, the dreadful and often fatal ergotism caused by a fungus that attacks rye, then the staple cereal of northern Europe.
