Bessbrook & Newry Tram No 2, Ulster Transport Museum, Cultra, Co Down 1 - 7 May 2009. The steeply graded, three mile, 3ft gauge tramway opened in 1885 to carry workers to the model mill town of Bessbrook, Co Armagh. This tram was built in 1885 in Manchester by Ashbury's with a 20hp Mather & Platt motor. The body seen here came from a Dublin & Lucan tram. No 2 could only be driven from one end, shown by the headlight. It worked until the tramway closed in 1948. Power was generated by hydro-electricity and supplied by a third rail between the running lines, with an overhead cable at a level crossing.
