D601 Ark Royal & 34016 Bodmin, Barry scrapyard, 4 March 1972. Bodmin looks remarkably intact, apart from its rods, after eight years at Barry. It moved to the Buckinghamshire Rly Centre in July 1972 and steamed on the Mid Hants Rly in 1979. Bodmin subsequently returned to the main line, but in 2010 was out of use on the Mid Hants. D601 was one of five short-lived North British Warship diesel-hydraulics. They entered service in 1958-59, but were all withdrawn at the end of 1967. D601 came to Barry in 1968 with D600 Active and D6122. D600 was cut up in 1970, but the other two lasted until 1980 when they too were scrapped. There was no interest in diesel preservation at the time. Photo by Les Tindall.
