World War 2 viaduct over the Eden, Carlisle, 25 September 2009 - 1339. In war, as in peace, Carlisle was a crucial Anglo-Scottish railway hub. This viaduct was built partly as a contingency should the old one, over which the 'West Highlander' is travelling, be bombed, and partly so that train delays could be avoided by extending the goods lines across the Eden from Caldew junction to Etterby junction.
