Settle - Carlisle plandampf, February 2017

16 photos of the second of three plandampf days, when 60163 Tornado worked normal passenger services between Skipton and Appleby. There were two workings each way daily. The plandampf was organised by Northern Rail to publicise the Settle & Carlisle line in anticipation of its reopening north of Armathwaite on 31 March after a year-long closure caused by a huge landslip at Eden Brows.

The nine coaches were former Anglia Mark 2s 6042, 5964, 5929, 9520, 5985, 5998, 5950 & 5921 and Tornado support coach 21249. Four coaches were reserved for advance bookings, and four were available on the day. As the presence of the British Transport Police officer shows, there had been concerns that the plandampf might see a repeat of the mass trespass generated by Flying Scotsman in 2016 when it returned to the main line. In the event there was huge interest in the trains, spurred by extensive TV coverage, but there were no problems. Note the 'Harrington hump' installed to heighten part of this low platform.
