Looking north to Workington North from the dock road overbridge, 18 December 2009. The catastrophic floods of 19th - 20th November 2009 swept away all road and foot bridges at Workington, where only the rail bridge was left open. It gradually became clear that even a temporary road bridge would take months to build, and that road replacement trains would be needed for a considerable time. Network Rail announced on the 24th that they would build a new temporary station – ‘Workington North’ - to serve that part of the town cut off from central Workington. It opened on the 30th, coinciding with the launch of an emergency Maryport - Workington shuttle service, and closed on 8 October 2010.
