Norway in the world wars, 2: 1939 - 1945 Neutral Norway was rapidly overrun by the Germans in 1940, and under occupation for five years until the final German surrender in May 1945. This statue commemorates Leif 'Shetlands' Larsen, who made 52 clandestine 'Shetland bus' boat trips carrying arms and agents to Norway. He was the most highly decorated Allied naval officer of the war, having received numerous British and Norwegian awards.
