Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim, 5 June 2008 Nidaros is the old name for Trondheim. The cathedral stands on the site of the grave of Norway's patron saint, Olav. Building began in the 12th century. The cathedral is Norway's national sanctuary, akin to Westminster Abbey, and was used for coronations. (Norwegian monarchs are now blessed, not crowned.) Norway's crown jewels are on display in the nearby archbishop's palace.
