Welcome to Chatham historic dockyard! Sat 9 June 2012. The royal dockyard was in operation for almost 400 years, building and maintaining Royal Navy warships from the age of sail to the age of the submarine until closure in 1984. It occupies an 80 acre site, on which many buildings date from the 18th century. Nelson's Victory (1765) was built at Chatham. The last Royal Navy warship built at Chatham was the submarine Ocelot (1964), now preserved in the dockyard.
