Chatham historic dockyard, 2012: Small craft and submarines
27 photos of the former royal dockyard. It built and maintained Royal navy warships for 400 years, from the age of sail to the age of the submarine until closure in 1984. It occupies an 80 acre site, on which many buildings date from the 18th century. Nelson's Victory was built here in 1765. Kingswear Castle, Chatham, Sat 9 June 2012 1. Built at Dartmouth in 1924 for pleasure cruises on the River Dart, and now based at Chatham. She is owned by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society, who also own Waverley and Balmoral. Here are three photos of her starting a short trip on the River Medway.
