HMS XE-8, Chatham dockyard, 9 June 2012. The XE craft were improved X class boats built for operations in the Far East. XE-8 was built in 1944 by Thomas Broadbent & Sons. Four XE boats saw action but not XE-8, which was sunk as a target off Portland, salvaged, and is now the only surviving XE craft. The object in the foreground is a periscope in its packing case.
