Welcome to the Furka Oberalp line! 6 July 2006. The metre gauge FO, rack-fitted in parts, runs for 60 miiles through remote and mountainous terrain in the south of Switzerland from Brig east to Realp, Andermatt and Disentis. It did not open until 1926, and in 2003 merged with the Brig Visp Zermatt Rly to form the Matterhorn Gotthard Rly (MGB). The section between Realp and Oberwald, over the Furka Pass, was closed by snow every winter until the Furka base tunnel opened in 1982. The Furka Pass route is now operated as a tourist line by the Furka Mountain Steam Rly (DFB). This shot shows a train climbing west from Andermatt towards Realp and Brig.
