River Volga, Ulyanovsk, Russia, 1 September 2015. Looking east and showing the two bridges across the river, which is flowing south into the Caspian Sea. It is the largest and longest river in Europe. Ulyanovsk is on both sides of the river. The 5.5km long President bridge in the left distance was opened as recently as 2009. Until then, the Imperial bridge at right was the only bridge across the Volga for 400km. It had been opened in 1916 as a railway bridge, and lanes for road traffic were added in 1958.
