'Hanoi Hilton' prison museum, 2018
Vietnamese victory claims for the Operaton Linebacker II air offensive, 'Hanoi Hilton' prison museum, 7 March 2018. Linebacker II was carried out in December 1972. It lasted only 11 nights, but was the first time when B-52 bombers were allowed to attack the important but very heavily defended cities of Hanoi and Haiphong. The cities were severely damaged but, as can be seen, the Vietnamese claim to have shot down 23 B-52s and other aircraft over Hanoi. They call Linebacker II the 'Dien Bien Phu of the air', after their decisive victory over the French in 1954. American figures for the losses are lower. But the Paris Peace Accords which followed Linebacker II cleared the way for the US to withdraw from Vietnam and for the 'Hanoi Hotel' prisoners finally to go home, in March 1973.
